IN POSTMODERN LITERATURE, the theme of exploring one’s identity is prevalent. Autobiographical analyses of the relation between heritage and the present abound. In the case of Cuban expatriates, the return home is marked by a juxtaposition of conflicting experiences steeped in nostalgia, deconstructive imagery and the eternal quest for self. Carlos Frias, the American-born son of Cuban exiles, grew up hearing fantastic tales of the land of his parents. These parables became urgent reminders of his identity when he was sent to Cuba by his newspaper after Fidel Castro fell ill. He was suddenly faced with the ethereal and had to make the experience tangible and real. The result was Take Me With You. This evocative, spectacular and unforgettable memoir provides a fresh view of today’s Cuba, devoid of overt political commentary that could have overshadowed his narrative of discovery. He focuses, instead on the gritty, tangible lives of the people living in today’s Cuba. At the same time, he tries to reconstruct what the past was like for his parents, searching for his roots, discovering his history and reconstructing the past in a place that has undergone a 50-year revolution and where nothing is what it seems.

America’s family album is The Kennedy Family Album: Personal Photos of America’s First Family, a new compilation of images from acclaimed photographer Bob Davidoff with a foreword by Senator Edward Kennedy and essays by author Linda Corley. It is the album of every American family, the essence of an era gone by and a source of nostalgia for those who experienced it and who long for simpler times. It is important to grasp that even though the Kennedy years offered hope for a better world, the international political scene of the time was framed by a dangerous bipolar power structure between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union, which brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. It has long been established that the Kennedy clan is as close to a royal family as Americans have had. Jackie’s sense of style and John’s optimistic vision gave the country a strong foundation to continue living and growing while a menacing power was trying to undermine America’s influence on the world arena. It was also a time for social change; the Civil Rights movement was beginning to impress its mark on the American psyche. The Kennedys have had an undeniable influence on industry, philanthropy and politics marred with a legacy of tragedy and drama reminicient of the Greek classics.
In Linda Corley’s first book, we find never before seen images of the family’s days in the sun. From Palm Beach to Hyannis Port, Sun Valley and other favorite destinations, Davidoff captures moments that are still treasured by members of the family today. Up until his death in 2004, Bob Davidoff was the photographer in residence at the Kennedy’s “Winter White House” in Palm Beach. For almost fifty years he chronicled the extended family on holiday, capturing the youthful John F. Kennedy and his family during moments of relaxation. Many of his photographs landed in treasured family albums and scrapbooks of the Kennedy’s.
Linda Corley, an award-winning PBS television producer interviewed Davidoff before his death, which brought to light the family’s unscripted moments presented in these pages. As a television producer, she is used to working behind the camera. “I’m most comfortable writing and working the behind-the-scenes, and I have always found that very gratifying,” says Corley. But her low visibility is about to change as she steps into the national spotlight to promote her first book, which features never before published images of Jackie surprising her husband on the tarmac of Palm Beach airport and Rose leading a family sing-along in her home. The Kennedy Family Album opens an unsuspected window into the life of a First Family. From fancy balls, formal benefits and important charity events, to lounging in the presidential yacht, the Honey Fitz, shopping on Worth Avenue or Easter Mass at St. Edward’s Church, this window offers a peek at the happy moments of their lives. The Kennedys, like the Roosevelts, the Bushes and the Clintons, are among the most important American political families of the 20th century. In this book we see them as they enjoyed their most private moments.
In this magnificent edition, we are faced with personal portraits of America’s First Family in ways that make them as human and imperfect as the rest of us. Bob Davidoff’s legacy is his honest look at the private life of a very public family. Linda Corley’s words animate this saga and remind us of an era of optimism that many of us are trying to recover. Senator Ed Kennedy remarks on the book’s foreword, “Bob Davidoff was a magnificent photographer and a loyal friend. His remarkable personality and charming sense of humor had us all smiling whenever he aimed the camera our way. For me his legacy will live on in the wonderful photographs that he took of our family over the years.”
A long time has passed since the death of President Kennedy, but the enduring spirit of this family has kept them in the public eye, as political leaders and inspirational subjects. Their sacrifice is paired with a great sense of public service. Palm Beach was the glamorous, relaxed center they gravitated to when they needed to escape the natural tension of their circumstances. This book is a definitive look at their time in the sun. SA
